Ever get a chocolate craving but don’t feel like baking a whole cake? This sugar-free chocolate mug cake is a simple way to satisfy it with just a few everyday ingredients and a microwave. It makes one individual serving, takes only a few minutes to prepare, and is easy to customise with your favourite sugar-free chocolate chips. No oven, no big batch, and no pile of dishes to wash afterwards.

Ingredients

This recipe makes one mug cake.

2 tablespoons almond flour (about 14 g)

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tablespoon granulated allulose or your preferred sugar-free sweetener, adjusted to taste

¼ teaspoon baking powder

1 large egg

1 tablespoon milk of choice

1 tablespoon melted butter

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon sugar-free chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

Choose your mug. Use a microwave-safe mug that holds at least 10–12 ounces to leave room for the cake to rise.

Mix the dry ingredients. Add the almond flour, cocoa powder, sweetener and baking powder directly to the mug. Stir well, breaking up any lumps.

Add the wet ingredients. Mix in the egg, milk, melted butter and vanilla extract until you have a smooth batter. Scrape the bottom and sides of the mug so no dry ingredients remain.

Add the chocolate chips. Stir them into the batter, or sprinkle them over the top if you prefer a gooey chocolate centre.

Microwave the cake. Cook on high for 60 seconds, then check the centre. If it still looks wet, continue in 10-second intervals until the cake is just set. Depending on your microwave, this usually takes around 60–90 seconds.

Let it rest. Leave the mug cake to stand for 1–2 minutes before eating. The mug will be hot, and the cake will continue to set as it cools slightly.

Enjoy it straight from the mug, or add a spoonful of unsweetened yoghurt or a few fresh berries.

Tips for the Best Sugar-Free Mug Cake

Don’t overcook it. Mug cakes cook quickly, and even an extra 20 seconds can make the texture dry. Stop cooking when the centre is just set.

Mix thoroughly. Almond flour can form small lumps, while cocoa powder tends to stick to the bottom of the mug. Give the batter a good stir before microwaving.

Choose your sweetener carefully. Allulose gives the cake a softer texture and mild sweetness. If you use a different sugar-free sweetener, adjust the amount to suit its sweetness level.

Want a dairy-free version? Replace the milk with an unsweetened plant-based alternative and use melted coconut oil instead of butter.

Can you use coconut flour? Not as a direct replacement for almond flour. Coconut flour absorbs much more liquid, so the recipe would need different measurements.

Make it extra chocolatey. Add a few sugar-free chocolate chips to the centre of the batter for a softer, richer bite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a sugar-free chocolate mug cake without almond flour?

Almond flour gives this mug cake its moist texture and rich flavour. Coconut flour isn’t a one-to-one substitute because it absorbs much more liquid. For the best results, use almond flour as written.

Why did my mug cake turn out dry?

The most common reason is overcooking. Microwave power varies, so start with 60 seconds and add extra time in short intervals only if needed. Let the cake rest briefly before eating.

Can I make this mug cake without an egg?

The egg helps the cake hold together and gives it structure. You can experiment with an egg replacement, but the texture may be denser or softer, so the original recipe is the most reliable version.

Is this chocolate mug cake keto-friendly?

It can fit into some low-carb eating plans when made with almond flour and suitable sugar-free chocolate chips. The actual carbohydrate content depends on the brands and sweetener you use, so check the nutrition labels if you’re following a strict keto diet.

Can I prepare the batter ahead of time?

For the best texture, mix and cook the batter just before eating. It only takes a few minutes, and freshly cooked mug cake tends to have a softer texture than batter left sitting for a long time.

Does sugar-free mean calorie-free?

No. Almond flour, eggs and butter all provide calories, even when no regular sugar is added. Sugar-free ingredients can still contain calories and other carbohydrates.
